The currency of Hungary is the Forint, with notes coming in denominations of Ft20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000, 1,000, 500 and 200, and with coins coming in denominations of Ft100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Hotels, banks and bureau de changes can all be used for currency exchanges, along with some restaurants, airports, railway stations and travel agencies. Traveller’s cheques are accepted widely in banks and some stores, though it is recommended that to avoid additional conversion charges that they are in either US Dollars or Pounds Sterling. All currency exchange receipts should be retained in case they need to be presented to officials. ATMs are available in most towns, and the vast majority of international credit cards are accepted in larger establishments. It is also possible to withdraw cash from a great number of post offices with a credit card. Export of domestic currency is also limited to Ft200,000 and must be declared on exiting the country. The import of foreign currency is unlimited, provided that amounts over Ft50,000 are declared on arrival, with the export of foreign currency allowed up to the amount that was imported and the declaration must be made no longer than three months after arrival in the country.
