EU membership has meant that buying property in Hungary has opened up for foreigners, and the process is relatively simple with a lot less bureaucracy than in the past. The former Communist market of the country was one of the best positioned financially when the change to a capitalist market occurred in the 90s – this attitude transferred to the foreign investor market and has meant that foreigners are free to buy property in most locations in the country, so long as they are not located in government-owned or military regions there should be no problems with buying off plan property. Property purchased by foreigners is also free to be sold on at a later date. It should be noted that as a former Communist state, Hungary is party to the same potential pitfalls as other former Soviet countries and all land titles should be checked in detail to ensure legality of ownership, as reclamations can be lost and confused over time.
